![]() Image: Reuters "It's true!" Those words came straight from the mouth of Ottawa Senators forward Mike Fisher just moments ago, confirming the news that he is engaged to country superstar Carrie Underwood. "We're both obviously excited and very happy and so, exciting times for sure," Fisher continued. Carrie's publicist also confirmed the news to AI Now saying, "I’m happy to confirm that Carrie Underwood is engaged to Mike Fisher, and the couple couldn’t be happier. No wedding date has been set at this time." Fisher's teammate, Chris Neil, said he got a call shortly after the proposal. "I think it's great. It's a long time coming. There are going to be a lot of broken hearts here in Ottawa, all those girls who are in love with Mikey. But he’s marrying an awesome girl. It’s unbelievable for him,” said Neil. Other family members and friends got a text Sunday evening at around 9pm. "He was pretty excited," said a family friend, who did not want to be identified. "She's a great gal and I think they're made for each other." No wedding date has been set at this time. Carrie was in Ottawa when Fisher, surrounded by family and friends, popped the question on Sunday. Carrie attended the Senators weekend victory over the Minnesota Wild, and the media will obviously be on the lookout for her at tonight's game against the Boston Bruins. Word of the engagement spread like a wild fire last night. The rumors started to swirl when a family friend tweeted the news. "Congratulations to mike fisher and Carrie underwood! We just got the call at our family Christmas get together :)" The relationship apparently began shortly after Fisher, 28, got backstage passes for Carrie's, 26, concert on March 21, 2008 at Scotiabank Place. “We had a friend, one of my band members was trying to hook us up...He was like, ‘I have this guy for you,’ I was like, ‘Oh, that’s great. What does he do?’ ‘He plays hockey,’" Carrie told Ellen DeGeneres in November. The two have been together for a little over a year. Carrie gave Mike a shout-out on the liner notes of her latest release, Play On. "Thank you #12," Carrie wrote, referring to his team number for the Ottawa Senators. "You are the most amazing addition to my life! You are such a wonderful person and have had such an amazing hand in the building of this album and in the growth of me as a person. I love you so much! You make my life better in every way! I thank God for you every day... xoxo, Carrie." Just last month Carrie talked to Ellen DeGeneres about her relationship, saying it was the longest distance relationship she'd ever had, but that is was as strong as ever. "We see each other more than people think we see each other," Carrie told Ellen. "We don't go out...but we do get to see each other."
UPDATE: Carrie was at the NHL game last night and of course the media managed to snap some photos of her ring! The Senators lost to the Bruins 2-0.
While a wedding date has yet to be set, Mike's website says they hope to wed this coming summer!
The PeterBorough Examiner got reaction from Mike's family: Jim and Karen Fisher are "excited" that their son, Ottawa Senators' centre Mike Fisher, got engaged to former "American Idol" singer Carrie Underwood over the weekend. "Both Karen and I were quite excited, we're very happy for them," Jim said yesterday. "We've got to know her quite well over the last year and she's a great girl. "We just think they make a great couple." Also, Johnathon Arndt would like to formally congratulate Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher on their engagement. Johnathon Arndt is proud and honored to be the designer for the Flawless Yellow Diamond Engagement Ring. "This ring is a symbol of love from Mike Fisher to Carrie Underwood" (via press release) Congrats Carrie and Mike! |
